All materials that are natural and/or recycled are sterilized through a series of processes that include steaming and baking. One of the best ways to apply our ground scatter is to use a thick white (PVA) glue and then sprinkle the scatter on it until covered. The glue dries, typically, to a satin clear finish but is usually not visible underneath the scatter.

You are certainly not limited to using just PVA glue however. There are many types of adhesives that will "work" for basing. We are only suggesting the "best" medium for using with our products.

Why coffee and tea?

The coffee and tea (recycled) are put through rigorous attempts at eliminating any kind of staining possibilities. Typically the scatter does not stain or bleed out. Coffee gives a great soil and/or mud effect for bases while tea offers a nice look for underbrush effects.

Walnut shells, for real?

Yes for real... When walnut shells are ground down to a specific grade, they very much look like miniature rocks. Big rocks, small rocks, medium rocks. They are very convincing illusions to the eye.

Cork, seriously?

Yup! Cork is one of the most overlooked mediums for basing in the entire hobby. They can be shaped to fit just about any base, for good or for bad. Cork is one of the most versatile materials for basing. Some of my best bases were constructed just out of cork.

The truth about ballast?

What is isn't... ground up shells of nuts or crushed sea shells. A lot of manufacturers use these and call it "ballast". Our ballast is made using only quartzite rocks that have been ground down to a certain grade and then dyed with colorfast colors. Scale wise, anything larger than our ballast would be considered boulders. Ballast should be used only on bases that are meant to represent a rocky surrounding.
